ROM Manager and Clockwork Recovery Image

ROM Manager is a Android front end to the Clockwork Recovery image.

wompa
Features of the recovery image include Nandroid backup, adb shell, mount USB storage, advanced update.zip options (ignore asserts and signature checks), and file browser (so you can place your zips in subdirectories and organize them).

The easiest way, by far, to install the recovery is by downloading ROM Manager off the market. But for those that would prefer a manual installation, you can grab the APK and recovery image below.

Don't see your phone? Email me if you want to help me get it working!

And of course, all the source can be found on Github.

There seems to be a significant amount of care bear missing from this recovery image.

Any idea if this will work with the CDMA Hero variant or just with the GSM one?
(I know RA has one specifically for the CDMA variant.)

Why you don't use Amon-RA custom recovery avalaible on Xda-developers ?

Anonymous said...

As @Imfloflo said, in the xda forum is available the Amon_RA recovery source code.. But I'll try this one ;)

What advantages would this have over Aman Ras recovery?

Will this work on CDMA Hero?

Will it install Smoked Glass tar.gz rom?

Joel Brauer said...

Good effort. I'm sticking with RA because it has a LOT more features.

But Koush give sources instead of Amon_RA ... you can improve it !

Amon_RA always gave his source code, check his dream recovery on xda...

Very good job. I'll be using your folder navigation and file selection into my new 1.6.0 recovery for DSTL1 if you don't mind. I have that code half finished but no time to complete. Users always need more.

Thank you and congratulations for your blog. I follow every entry.

Unknown said...

I am using it instead of RA and I like your better. Are you going to keep updating as time goes on???

Manup456 said...

This is great with the feature to install from any folder,if there was some ext wipe and partition feature like creating, upgrade etc...wipe ext stuff like that would be perfect.

Anonymous said...

Your install from folder option added into the rest of Ra's Image recovery options would be insane.

Unknown said...

Like the features of your recovery image but I miss having the option of running commands from the console, any chance of this feature being added in the near future.

I can't get the Droid version of 1.6.9 to actually mount USB from the manual recovery menu, it says it is mounted (rather it gives me the option to unmount, but it never does mount on the PC) but I know I am connected as debugging mode shows that I am...

Flashed this on to my CDMA Hero. It flashed without any issues and loads fine. I can scroll up and down on the menu but I can't actually select anything.

Looks very interesting. I think I'll stick with Amon_Ra's recovery image for my G1, but I'll probably give this one a try when I get my Nexus One.

I used ROM manager to load a ROM, it booted to shell, installed the ROM and rebooted at the end. It starts the initial boot but locks up(waited 20 minutes) and now I can't boot to recovery console?

Is there a way to get to the recovery console?

Anonymous said...

Can you make custom recovery image for HTC Tattoo users?

Unknown said...

I am having the same issue with the CDMA hero, flashed fine, can scroll, but cant actually select anything in the menu.

Unknown said...

not 100% sure but you use a function:

device_perform_action(chosen_action)

which i cant find defined anywhere, maybe this is why it wont actually allow users to select menu items?

recovery.c - Line 409

?? hope thats the issue...

Running RomManager and RecoveryImage 1.8.4 on a HTC Dream

While running a back i am constantly getting errors saying it cannot mount sd-ext (does not exist). I definitely do have an ext partition to install apps to. Apps2SD works perfectly.

Is there anything i can do, or u can do to fix it. I like the idea of RomManager but if i cant buckup my ext partition its not much use to me.

Thanks

I have to add ext support to the recovery for magic and dream for sd-ext backup to work. I'll add that this weekend. Sorry!

Koush, thanks for the hard work on this. I've compared a numer of launchers under rooted ESE81 and yours is the best balanced and esthetically pleasing graphically. So far, this version seems pretty stable, too.

Thanks again!

Can you add a confirmation button before it performs an action such as restoring or backup? I was at the restore menu and the file had a backslash, so I figured it was a folder that I would be able to browse. Instead it just restored everything right away. I'm not blaming my stupidity on you, but can you add a confirmation for people like me? =]

Anonymous said...

Backups and restores work perfectly. The changing ROM feature does not appear to be working (free or premium). I tried all four downloads of the free version, and received a failure each time which is why I know the restore feature works quite nicely. I thought I'd purchase the premium app, and have received the same result. The primary difference here is that NO other other ROMS show up once I've updated to the premium edition. I also downloaded a ROM to my sdcard, and tried an install. The install failed again. Running a Mytouch orginal.

RJ Scott said...

For some reason I'm no longer able to boot into recovery mode via ROM Manager or by using the hardware keys on my G1 (Home + END). The phone hangs indefinitely on the initial G1 boot screen. I've been using the premium edition for a week or so without issues.

I just wanted to get this out in case anyone is experiencing the same issue and I'll update as I work through the issue.

zero-cool said...

I am having the same problem RJ is having. I upgraded to Cyanogen 5.0.7 on my G1 dream. With Zero Problems. Then upgraded my recovery image last night from Cyanogen + JF edition to the Clockwork Recovery Image via the ROM manager software. But after upgrading I have not been able to enter recovery mode via (home + end) or Rom manager. Any help would be great. The Amon_ra tutorial says there is a memory issue with 5.0.7 and you should not upgrade from terminal application. Perhaps that's what ROM manager does to upgrade to the clockwork img?

Lorelei said...

Same problem as RJ and Matthew...

Unknown said...

the premium downloads aren't working..lame

Koush said...

New ROM Manager should fix the flashing problem.

Lorelei said...

New one may prevent it from happening in the first place, but I tried reflashing my recovery with it and I still can't get in. :(

Koush said...

If you are on Dream/Magic, you need to fastboot erase your recovery. CyanogenMod 5.x has some bugs in it that makes flash_image fail.

Lorelei said...

I am on Magic, but I got it to work by clearing recovery in terminal before flashing with the new version.

zero-cool said...

Ok Koush is correct. I did a fastboot flash of the recovery img and it worked. Thanks for the help!

Lorelei said...

Yeah, fastboot would work of course, but I still have a perfect SPL. Going to correct that today as it would have saved me a lot of stress.

Would I be out of line by asking for some detail on using fastboot and/or wiping recovery via teminal?

Does the backup rom option in the app back up all of my applications and their data and all of the system settings (similar to selecting all options in advanced nandroid backup in SPRecovery)?

Starting from stock Motorola Droid 2.1 rooted, is it really necessary to do a data wipe before installing http://koush.tandtgaming.com//motorola/sholes/update-cm-5.0.7-Droid-signed.zip ?

If yes, I can back everything up using MyBackup Pro APKs+Data. When I restore from that after installing the CM rom, what should I NOT restore? And what settings (if any) would I have to manually reconfigure?

Anonymous said...

Can you add the cyan version of the amon ra recovery as an option?

spr22 said...

Hello, i am having alot of problems when using any of the options on the rom manager, any time i choose to do a backup or reboot into recovery (both from the rom manager and holding home+end) i get stuck at the MyTouch splash screen then have to take the battery out and do a Fastboot which then says no image mess around a little and get it to restart to "normal" use. I did not do a wipe before i installed this flash and is really what i would like to do since i am getting a lot of force closes. I have a MT3G running 5.0.7-ES CyanogenMod.

zero-cool said...

Scott you need to either wipe your recovery image via terminal and use rom manager to reinstall or use fastboot to install another recovery image. I had the same problem on my g1 last week.

spr22 said...

Matthew, thank you for this, i dont know how to access the terminal, i have an app called terminal emulator (same thing?) if not i do know how to get into fastboot by holding the down volume when powering on but do not know how to do an install from there. Can you be a little more specific for this newb? Thanks for your help!

spr22 said...

Ok so i was able to figure everything out! Works great now 10x smoother now that i wiped. What i did was in the options to install an older version of the Clockwork Recovery i did, then rebooted and then reinstalled the new clockwork recovery and was able to do everything i wasnt before ie. reboot into recovery do a backup, wipe/factory reset, flash new roms... Thanks for the help!

When I run the command above the phone is rebooted and the splash image is shown... for a long long time. On a terminal, if I run "fastboot devices" the result is "??????????? fastboot". "adb devices" doesn't show nothing.

Some idea?

Bit confused wrt Motorola Milestone support by Clockwork Recovery and ROM Manager.

The Website list box of supported devices as well as ROM manager is giving option for Motorola Milestone, however you seem to be telling that Milestone is not supported.

Note that I used Universal And root to root Milestone and then installed ROMManager, and in turn CW Recovery, however the CW Recovery doesn't seem to have got installed properly, even thou ROMManager is showing that I currently have 2.5.0.1 of CW Recovery installed

Kmobs, to repeat what I /msg'd you in IRC just now: GNU parted (libparted), besides repartitioning, also resizes certain filesystems, including fat16, fat32, and ext2 (restriction on ext2: new start must = old start), according to http://www.gnu.org/software/parted/manual/parted.html#resize
So, it would make sense to port GNU parted into Clockwork Recovery, for various options regarding repartitioning for sd-ext, first losslessly resizing fat32; possibly clockworkmod could also do it itself while the phone is fully up, unmounting /sdcard and whatever else is mounted on it, and informing the user if they have too many files for a resize (it would be less nuisansome than rebooting to clockwork recovery, finding out you don't have enough space, rebooting OS, then deleting files, then rebooting to clockwork recovery again, although an on-the-spot browser with filesizes and dates in clockwork recovery to delete files would work too).

That way, you could integrate tightly with the new CM 6.1 Chris Soyars/whoever's apps2ext filesystem, doing repartitioning, even resizing of existing partitions (such as those who already have an ext2/ext3/ext4 partition, although I note you'd have to get resize2fs source for ext3/ext4 if necessary), making such a system more user friendly, and making it more available to a wider audience. If you are worried about all the people who will loose data, just make "do Nandroid backup" followed by "Copy nandroid backup and /sdcard from phone to your computer" hand-holding steps in clockworkmod, with a override warning, so no one gets disappointed by lost data.

With only a few keypresses, you could redistribute storage for your partitions, or create a new /sd-ext partition.

Perhaps none of this makes sense?

Any chance of getting Kyocera Zio M6000 support?

It's the first prepay Android so should be fairly popular.

Hi Koush,

I already buy your ROM Manager premium via your ROM manager itself (PayPal), the question is...if I reflash my device with another ROM (let say CM7 - I wish), do I need to purchase another ROM Manager Premium? or I do eligible for that? if so, how do I got my premium on my new ROM. Thank you....

Best regards,
David.

Using ROM Manager 2.0.2.6 on HTC Wildfire. I can't see ROM Managers 2.0.2.8 - 2.5.0.2 on the Marketplace. Any reason for this?

Also, I did have Clockworkmod recovery 2.5.07 as part of unrevoked 3.21 but ROM Manager didn't recognise it and asked me to revert back to 2.5.0.1

Thanks

My brain hurts, too! I have a Droid Incredible, running Froyo, ROM Manager (paid version) installed, Superuser installed, etc....

Each time I try to install a custom ROM, I get stuck at the start-up screen (i.e, it never fully boots). Now, when restoring my last working version, it goes through boot-up, but nothing works - none of the buttons or any of the touch-screen icons.

This is getting very tiresome! If I do a factory reset, I can start up, but have to start-over completely. I don't mind re-entering my data, but all those apps that I have downloaded are gone that way, and Market and Appbrain don't seem to store a record of everything I had - only what I have - which after a factory reset, isn't much.

I have a feeling that if I could repair permissions in recovery mode, that might help an awful lot, but, unless I'm missing it, there seems to be no way to do that. I can't get into ANY of my apps, including ROM Manager after my restore to be able to run permission repair from there.

Any brilliant ideas would be most appreciated! A nice user manual would be nice, too. There are so many unexplained choices available it MAKES MY BRAIN HURT!

I have traced my problem to the SD card. I removed it, and rebooted without a problem. I now have saved the card to a disk image and will reformat it both before replacing it in the phone, and then I'll let the phone do it again. ROM Manager has some customized formating settings. This is a 32 GB card, so I have plenty of room. Any suggestions about how I should let RM partition the card?

I have a Samsung Captivate and your utility worked fine. But it has stopped. I am running Cognition 2.2 Beta 5.5 ROM. On reboot to execute a backup I get the following:

E:failed to verify whole-file signature
E:signature verification failed
-- Applying Multi-CSC
Installing Multi-CSC
Installation Aborted

Have tried it twice now with the same result. I also noticed today that ClockworkMod release an update which ROM Manager downloded. Not sure it matters.

Any help would be appreciated.

Not sure what happened. I attempted to install Velocity v.03, with apparent success. However, it looks like the stock Android, though it does have SU app, and removed stock apps. Titanium is no there, neither is busy box, or ROM manager. I can open the market and see the apps, but it won't start download on any of them. I did reprogram my phone with Verizon, and updated the raoming with *228. Any ideas?

Could you describe the process that removes /data/.recovery_mode after a successful boot?
